STILL LIFE, PART 1: The Object As Hero

*NOTE: It does not matter if you don't have a box like these photos illustrate. A table and blank background will suffice. Don't sweat it. The box is only an ideal.

DIRECTIONS:
1. If you are able, and have a cardboard box, make a lightbox like the one below. The sides are cut out so that you can filter the side light. If you don't have a lightbox, just use a table and wall.
2. If you have a piece of fabric or large paper to create a seamless background, great. If not, do what you can with what you have.
3. Two lights - one on either side - will be needed to illuminate your object(s). (but play with one light, or three...)
4. Begin taking your photographs of an object or two. You might choose the object(s) at random, or you could treat this like a self-portrait through objects. That might be fun.
5. When you photograph, get close enough that you are not photographing the box, table, or surrounding area. Like this:

RATIONALE:
To make your objects look 'heroic.'
Think of it as trying to make the most beautiful/funky/interesting/clever photographs of your object(s) as possible. Give the object(s) some life with light, shadow, color, black and white...

IDEAS FOR PHOTOS:
-As you take photos, move the lights slightly to create different shaped shadows & highlights. Even small changes can make a big difference.
-Try different fabrics of pattern/color to filter the color and character of the light (ex. light that is filtered through a red t-shirt will be significantly different that light filtered through a white tissue.
-Arrange your objects differently for various groups of photos.
-Think outside the box (yeah, I said that right there ;) - get creative with your light, shadow, color, object, background texture...

HOW MANY PHOTOS?
Five...50...500...you'll do what you can with what you have. :)
I believe in you, and your creativity.
