AGENDA FOR THURSDAY, DEC. 13
Good morning, Photogs!
I'm sorry to be out, but whatever germ is going around, I now have it.
Please make the day productive:
1. Finish the 2nd GIF
2. Complete any work you are missing (and email me what projects you have completed: TuHSPhoto@ttsd.k12.or.us)
HW: For next class, make a 3rd set of photographs - of a sequence of events - for our next GIF - 25 photos minimum.
On Monday, I will take us through a tutorial about the final GIF that will incorporate something surreal, and you will need a sequence of photographs to alter/manipulate/change in some way.
Have a good day, and a good weekend. You are good people, and I'm sorry I will not see you today.

PROJECT #13: LIGHT FALL OFF PORTRAITS
DIRECTIONS:
1. Choose an agreeable subject.
2. Recreate the lighting examples below with an off-camera flash (if you've got one (?)), or a portable/movable light.
3. Be mindful of, and very specific, with the angle of the light for each image.
4. Insure the background is black/empty.
5. You will create a total of 24 images. (Make a few photos of each, just in case)
*If you have an external flash, the degrees in the first image indicate the angle at which the flash fires while taking the photograph.
**If you have an on-camera flash, the only time you will use it is for the 0/0 degree example below...and maybe not even then.
***Yes, you are most likely limited with the equipment you have. That is not our point. The rationale is to develop a greater awareness of light in relation to the illumination of your subject's face.
****Your subject does not need to smile. In fact, sans smile may be more interesting.

PROJECT #10: A PORTRAIT w/PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE
Marcel Proust, was a French novelist, critic, and essayist best known for his monumental novel À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time; earlier rendered as Remembrance of Things Past), published in seven parts between 1913 and 1927. He is considered by critics and writers to be one of the most influential authors of the 20th century.
The Proust Questionnaire is a questionnaire about one's personality. Its name and modern popularity as a form of interview is owed to the responses given by the French writer Marcel Proust.
The Proust Questionnaire has its origins in a parlor game popularized (though not devised) by Marcel Proust, the French essayist and novelist, who believed that, in answering these questions, an individual reveals his or her true nature.
The basic Proust Questionnaire is:
1.What is your idea of perfect happiness?
2.What is your greatest fear?
3.What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
4.What is the trait you most deplore in others?
5.Which living person do you most admire?

QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN TAKING A PHOTO
Question 1:
Are you answering the who, what, where, when and why of the photo?
This is
the first and most crucial question to ponder. The composition is everything,
as it is your point of view. First, take your time to look around the edges of
your frame, not just in its center.
Then, carefully think if your composition is according to the rule of thirds. If you are centering your subject, you are only answering the who question. When moving the subject away from the center, you will reveal the background and suddenly add more story to the image. Moving the subject away from the center can also add visual depth, and therefore, make the image more dynamic.
In essence, you are asking yourself where you want the viewer’s eyes to gravitate when looking at the picture. In composition, the rule of thirds means dividing the frame in thirds both horizontally and vertically and then placing the subject at one of the four intersecting points. So, it is vital to place the focal point at a prominent position. Decide how much of the composition you want your subject to occupy.

Question 2:
What are the competing focal points? And are they creating image clutter?
If you have a lot of visual information in the image, it can prove to be distracting for the viewers and mar the appeal of the image.
A simple way to get rid of clutter is to find a definitive visual focal point and then scan the background and foreground for any competing aspects that will take away from the prominence of the visual focal point. There are several ways in which you can enhance the focal point of an image. These include:

A simple way to get rid of clutter is to find a definitive visual focal point and then scan the background and foreground for any competing aspects that will take away from the prominence of the visual focal point. There are several ways in which you can enhance the focal point of an image. These include:
· The
focus: You will need to use
the depth of field so that the other
aspects in front or behind the visual focal point can be blurred.
· Positioning: The focal point should be placed at a prominent
position and should take up more than 1/3rd of the image
· Blur: Try experimenting with a slow shutter for added focal pull.
· Size: Perhaps make the focal point a large part of your
composition.
· Shape & Color: Finally, understanding and
composing for contrasting shapes and value/color can make the subject stand
out.
Question 3:
What do you intend to do with the background and the foreground?
One of the primary distractions in any type of photography is the background. When used correctly, the background can work to your benefit and enhance the aesthetic appeal of an image.

One of the primary distractions in any type of photography is the background. When used correctly, the background can work to your benefit and enhance the aesthetic appeal of an image.
You have
two choices when thinking about what to do with the background or the
foreground around the subject; blur/unfocus it, or leave it crisp/in focus.
Question 4:
What is the primary light source and how will it impact the quality of the image?
This is another vital consideration that will not only have a bearing on the type of equipment that you need but will also greatly influence the camera settings. Light is the most important element of photography; Without light, you lose the clarity of image.
If light
is dwindling/low, compensate by the use of artificial lighting or specific
camera settings such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
Identify the specific location of your light source(s).
Identify the specific location of your light source(s).
Mull over
the extent of available light.
You might
need to stabilize the camera (tripod, beanbag, surface, etc.) when shooting in
low/dim light. If your shutter speed is slower than 1/60th of a
second, you cannot hold the camera without recording your own body shake in the
resulting image.
Question 5:
What are you waiting for?
If you see an opportunity for a photograph, shoot it now. If the situation looks better later, shoot it again. It is simply best to shoot early, and shoot often. While you are wondering the previous four questions, the moment may disappear, so decide quickly. This is particularly true when taking a photo of children or wild life. Anticipate the moment. Be ready. It is always better to have a photo made rather than having the perfect composition and right settings, but the subject has disappeared.

PROJECT #6: AUTUMN LEAVES & LANDSCAPE
DIRECTIONS. Venture into the world and make photographs of autumn leaves. How you arrange and compose your photos is open to your interpretation. You may go about the project as a straight-forward landscape project. ...Or, you could collect leaf textures using macro settings. You can approach it like a still life project: arranging thing leaves as objects. Or you could think conceptually, and approach it like the environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy (click here for Andy).
REMEMBER:
1. Set the ISO of your camera appropriately.
2. Set the WB of your camera appropriately.
3. Open the aperture wide (small f-stop number) for out of focus background.
4. Use macro function for close up textures.
OPTIONS: Composition and rule of thirds, balance and asymmetry, macro...

I would like to change how
competitive the world has gotten. For teenagers everything seems like a competition
and you constantly have to live up to societal standards. This competition
comes from sports, academics, wealth, social media and celebrity influences.
Without all the competition people could focus on who they are and become who
they want to be for themselves without feeling like they are competing with
other people.
|
Racism
|
The world is so quick to judge
people, I would hope that people take time to get to know people and accept
them
|
i would to change is how people
think for others
|
there wasnt so much hate in the
world
|
I would like to change the way
that people view others, more specifically their individual beliefs and
feelings towards certain subjects. Every person has the right to think and do
whatever they feel is right, and I believe that in today's society, there is
so much hate and negativity that surrounds having opposing beliefs and
thinking outside of what is seen as normal. If we all respected each other
and our personal thoughts and feelings, everyone would be much happier and
more confident in themselves, creating a better world to live in.
|
If I could change one thing about
the world, it would be a larger amount of acceptance and friendliness between
the human race. (Essentially what you said as well, after I wrote this!)
|
Humans have lost the way of
kindness, we are so quick to judge and spread hate and we don't seem to care
what affect it has on our world. I would want people to just be kind to
others no matter their beliefs or opinions.

I would like to stop the right
side and the wrong side about things we sometimes agree and disagree that
don't really have a side.
